Homemade toothpaste, 100% natural!

Whether you are in an ecological approach, zero waste, or simply want to save money by making your own cosmetic products, homemade toothpaste powder is an excellent alternative to industrial products.

Homemade Toothpaste!

There are several recipes, all very easy to make and requires few ingredients to obtain 100% natural toothpaste.

Personally, I can't live without it! I love to alternate between different recipes and see that my teeth are better off. I hope, through this article, to make you want to take the plunge into homemade!

Why powder toothpaste is better than regular toothpaste?

We all know that having good oral hygiene is essential for good health. That's why we're always looking for a toothpaste that works and keeps our breath fresh.

The problem with industrial toothpaste is that it often contains products that are toxic or harmful to health. Even if it is spat out, a tiny quantity of these substances is assimilated via the mucous membranes: these are very absorbent parts of the body.

Considering that we brush our teeth between two and three times a day, this represents a large number of harmful products ingested by the body throughout a lifetime.

To name a few, we find for example:

  • Triclosan, which is an endocrine disruptor that can develop resistance to antibiotics,
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate is a taste suppressant, and it contains 1,4-dioxane, a potentially carcinogenic substance that also has toxic effects on marine life.
  • Finally, fluorine is a toxic product that accumulates in the tissues of the body, because we ingest it despite ourselves with each brushing.

Homemade toothpaste recipes

Fortunately, there are now many recipes with natural ingredients that allow for good dental hygiene. Of course, this goes hand in hand with effective brushing and the right choice of the toothbrush.

We offer you two recipes here, but there are others. Do not hesitate to adapt the composition of the homemade toothpaste according to your problem: sensitive teeth, sensitive gums...

Homemade clay powder toothpaste

First, find a small glass jar, and sterilize it by soaking it in boiling water.

Mix two tablespoons of white clay with one tablespoon of calcium carbonate.

  • White clay cleans the teeth, and it is remineralizing and purifying. It also helps absorb odours.
  • Calcium carbonate is a thickener that provides calcium. It is also a mild abrasive.
Then add a few drops of essential oils.

  • Three drops of tea tree essential oil will provide a purifying and disinfecting action.
  • Three drops of peppermint essential oil will bring freshness and a good smell to the toothpaste powder.

Good to know: before using an essential oil, always find out about its contraindications. These are very powerful natural ingredients, and some are not suitable for everyone.

Homemade activated charcoal toothpaste

If you want to get a whitening toothpaste, activated charcoal is THE whitening powder for you!

For this recipe, we suggest you use:

  • coconut oil: the texture will be less powdery and more like a paste (knowing that the texture of coconut oil changes according to the ambient temperature). The latter has whitening and anti-bacterial properties.

Moreover, it is recommended for Ayurvedic mouthwashes. If you like Ayurveda, do not hesitate to add siwak powder to your recipe: it is excellent for healthy gums!

In a jar, pour a large tablespoon of it, then add half a teaspoon of activated charcoal powder. Its absorbent and detoxifying power is no longer to be proven, and over time it whitens teeth!

Finally, add three drops of lemon essential oil, which has a purifying action. It also allows you to bring a different taste to homemade charcoal toothpaste.

How to use toothpaste powder?

At first, you will have to go against the habits ingrained in childhood. Indeed, using powdered toothpaste can be confusing at first.

First, the absence of surfactants means that there is no foam. This does not mean that toothpaste is not effective, on the contrary. The action of the toothbrush will be all the more important, and you have to go over each tooth several times.

Concretely, we advise you to slightly wet your toothbrush, then dip it in the pot to collect a little powder. It's the same principle for the recipe based on coconut oil.

Then brush your teeth normally, between three and five minutes, then rinse. You will be impressed by the feel. Not to mention the savings made unlike the purchase of toothpaste!

If you are wondering if this toothpaste really works, the answer is yes. The power of nature and natural ingredients is well established.

Do not hesitate to alternate the two recipes to take advantage of each of their active ingredients and benefits.

100% natural and homemade toothpaste: is it good for pregnant women?

Yes, but without essential oils. As mentioned above, it is essential to be well informed before using them. Indeed, most are strongly discouraged from pregnant and breastfeeding women.

My Final DIY Toothpaste Tips

Do not hesitate to play on the ingredients according to your problem of the moment. For example, do not use activated charcoal in all your recipes, but rather in whitening cures.

Use tea tree essential oil during a period when you are prone to canker sores… in short, take advantage of being able to choose your components to always have a tailor-made recipe!
